Department Description

The Whiting School’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) is a close-knit group of both established and energetic, young faculty who work with their students across disciplines in a research-intensive environment.  In their work, they combine science and engineering in new and innovative ways in order to meet the challenges of today’s rapidly changing technological world.

In recent years, the ME department moved away from an organizational structure based on traditional topics and fields within mechanical engineering. Now, faculty and students focus their efforts on cutting-edge research that spans departments and divisions, both within the school of engineering and across the university.

In addition to research, one-on-one interactions between faculty and students and the free development and exchange of ideas are also integral to the department’s structure and philosophy.
